St. Lawrence University goes green with the purchase of renewable
energy from Juice Energy

With the acquisition of renewable energy credits (RECs) through Juice Energy, St. Lawrence University has begun to meet their obligations as signatories to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.

The purchase of over 2800 megawatt hours of Green-e certified National Wind RECs marks the beginning of the university’s move to green power. In addition to reducing the university’s carbon footprint, the RECs will help the Johnson Science Center meet LEED (Leadership in Environmental Engineering and Design) certification requirements. Over 50% of the annual electricity consumption of the Johnson Science Center will be met through the purchase of wind credits.

Juice Energy, a New York based electricity supplier specializing in renewable energy solutions, facilitated the purchase of RECs for St. Lawrence. Jon Moore, co-founder of Juice, is looking forward to working with the University: “St. Lawrence is taking a major step towards lowering their greenhouse gas emissions. But even more importantly, they’re showing the University community the benefits of investing in the fight against global warming.”

Along with the renewable purchase, Juice is supplying all of the electricity consumed by the university and is helping St. Lawrence manage their exposure to electricity market risk.

Tom Coakley, VP of Administrative Operations at St. Lawrence, believes the move to green power will prove beneficial on multiple levels: “We pledged in April to reduce our carbon footprint and we’re doing just that through our partnership with Juice. Not only will we feel a little better every time we switch on a light, but our new strategic approach to purchasing energy should make our budget meetings a little easier to sit through as well.”

St. Lawrence’s dedication to environmental causes goes far beyond the use of green energy. In fact, the University has asked their Juice Energy Advisor, Rosi Kerr, a graduate of Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, to guest teach a class on climate change during the upcoming semester.
