Juice Energy aims to squash the carbon footprint of the 2008 Bear Stearns Tournament of Champions through unique sponsorship.

As the world’s finest Squash players descend on Grand Central Terminal for this year’s marquee event, they’ll be doing so with a “cleaner” conscience thanks to Juice Energy Inc. – a New York based electricity supplier specializing in renewable energy. In a innovative type of sponsorship, Juice is donating their greenhouse gas management services to help reduce the tournament’s impact on global climate change.

Held in New York’s Grand Central Terminal, the seven-day tournament is the world’s largest spectator Squash event. With all the fanfare, however, comes an estimated 54 tons of greenhouse gases. As part of their sponsorship, Juice has made investments in green power and carbon offsets to neutralize these emissions.

With the help of event organizers, Juice created a detailed inventory of emissions resulting from the tournament. These included player travel, hotel energy use, event lighting, and the fuel burned to transport the massive 19-ton glass court to and from the event. Juice then offset the emissions with the purchase of Voluntary Gold Standard Emission Offsets and Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).

Along with reducing the event’s carbon footprint, Juice is setting-up a booth to discuss theirservices. Juice Energy Environmental Director Timothy Treadwell is eager to talk with people about the differences they can make: “We are thrilled to be a part of this terrific event. On one hand, we’re helping to create a more climate-friendly tournament. On the other hand, it’s an ideal opportunity to connect with key decision makers. Our message is simple: We can help large corporations lower their energy costs by 5-8% while also having a reducing their impacts on the climate. We’re looking forward to spreading the word and watching all the action.”

Squash may be the name of the game, but this year’s Bear Stearns Tournament of Champions is all about going green.
