IN THE SPIRIT OF ITS EARLIER RESIDENTS,
THE HAY-ADAMS INTRODUCES THE SELECT AUTHOR SERIES

Author Patricia O’Toole Inaugurates The Select Author Series with her newest release,
When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt after the White House (Simon & Schuster)

Washington, D.C. - In the late 1800s, the intellectually spirited and socially regarded families of John Hay and Henry Adams resided at 16th and H Streets, right across from the White House. They cultivated an intimate group of the era’s leading politicians, writers and artists who had discussions on politics, art, literature and science. Today, in this same spirit, the Hay-Adams is introducing an ongoing gathering featuring the works of writers which rekindle that same intellectual and social spirit that once graced the site on which the Hotel now stands.

The launching party of the Hay-Adams Select Author Series will take place today, Tuesday, March 15 beginning at 6:00pm in the elegant John Hay Room at the Hay-Adams. The first author will be Patricia O’Toole. Ms. O’Toole will discuss and take questions regarding her newest book, When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt after the White House (Simon& Schuster), which has already received positive media attention. “Patricia O’Toole brings eloquence and keen psychological insight to a familiar subject; the result is a lovely unpretentious and learned tale of a great man who cold never master his own ambition,” says Jon Meacham of Newsweek. “A magnificently told and researched account of Teddy Roosevelt's post-presidential adventures,” seconds Kathleen Dalton of the Boston Globe.

“We are excited about the introduction of the Select Author Series and hope that it will offer guests an intellectual and social retreat,” said Kay Enokido, Owner’s Representative of the Hay-Adams who is hosting this event together with Strobe Talbott, President of Brookings Institution and his wife, Brooke Shearer, Consultant for the International Partnership for Microbicides. “As Ms. O’Toole published The Five of Hearts: An Intimate Portrait of Henry Adams and His Friends, we are honored to have her as our first featured author.”

The Five of Hearts: An Intimate Portrait of Henry Adams and His Friends was one of three finalists for the 1991 Pulitzer Prize in biography, and portrays the extraordinary relationship of the John Hay and Henry Adams families and their close knit circle of prominent friends, one of whom was Teddy Roosevelt.
